Week Two Recap
Girls
Suffern Invitational
The Bronx Science girls traveled to New Jersey and turned in an impressive performance, finishing 1st of 3 teams in the Varsity A race. They were 3rd of 11 teams in the merge. You read that correctly, 11 teams were spread out over 3 varsity races. Sally Kramer finished 4th and Hazel Lyons-Baum was 6th to lead the way. New-to-XC Clara Grosso makes an immediate impact, finishing as their 3rd girl in 9th place.
Their JV squad finished 3rd of 4 complete teams, led by Mila Wilson’s 9th place finish.
Bob Pratt Invitational
A few PSAL teams ran in the Varsity Red race, with only West End Secondary and Francis Lewis having enough to score. WESS finished 9th of the 12 teams in the race. Ava Massimo led WESS, finishing 39th and running 23:59 over the difficult Sunken Meadow course. Francis Lewis finished 12th, led by Sophia Wu’s 63rd place finish in 26:11. The top PSAL finisher in the race was Ella Jenson of The Clinton School, who finished 29th in 23:42. Lily Rustin of Riverdale/Kingsbridge Academy finished 33rd in 23:51.
WESS finished 4th of 5 teams in the Novice Race. Maya Kantrowitz finished 9th in the race.
The only PSAL runner in the Freshman race was Lisa Roset of WESS, who finished 60th.
Regis Invitational
Varsity A Race (10 teams)
Brooklyn Tech won the Varsity A race with a total of 63 points. They were led by Senior Lily Korniewicz and sophomore Myla Hendrich who placed 8th and 9th and ran 17:34 and 17:39, respectively, over the 4k course at Van Cortlandt. Bayside placed last, led by Madison Herrera, who finished 42nd in 20:45. Mirabelle Threadgold of Lab Museum ran 22:19 to finish 64th.
Varsity B Race (10 teams)
Three PSAL teams competed in the Varsity B race. Stuyvesant placed 3rd with 107 points. They were led by sophomore Isla Broadbent running 17:07 to finish 9th. Townsend Harris scored 118 points to finish 4th. Senior Natalia Piszczatowski ran 16:50 to finish 7th. The girls from Curtis finished 8th, led by senior Meena Morris, who finished 16th in 18:07.
Varsity Merge Results:
3. Stuyvesant
4. Brooklyn Tech
5. Townsend Harris
16. Curtis
19. Bayside
Freshman Race
The most revealing girls race of the day at Van Cortlandt was the Freshman race. The Stuyvesant girls finished 4th of the 6 teams in the race, led by Nina Figueroa, who ran 11:59 to finish 25th. Townsend Harris only ran four girls, with their top finisher being Olivia Lee, who ran 12:14 to finish 33rd. It’s no surprise that these two programs don’t seem like they’ve landed any Fast Freshman™ (they’ve combined to have one this decade). However, Brooklyn Tech is a different story. Brooklyn Tech ran only three girls in the race, but had girls finish in the top three. Sophie Walther finished 2nd, less than a second behind winner Reid Macari of Notre Dame, running 9:49. Lilah Murphy (Melia’s sister, we assume) finished 3rd in 10:23.
Boys
Suffern Invitational
The Bronx Science boys won the Varsity B race easily, placing five runners in the top seven, all of whom broke 17 minutes. Junior Christopher Thom covered the 5000m course in 16:09. Teammate Elijah Hernandez finished a tenth of a second later to finish 2nd. Eliot Faith (4th), Lex Yeung (6th) and Aldo Hilpert-Navas (7th) rounded out their team scoring. The Wolverines were also 1st in the merge.
Their JV squad also won the JV race, led by Shaad Branker’s victory in 17:41.
Bob Pratt Invitational
The Boys Varsity Red race featured three PSAL squads. Riverdale/Kingsbridge Academy placed 9th of 15 teams. Mason Tejada led the way, finishing 28th in 18:50. The Clinton School finished 14th, led by Ely Collado running 20:44 for 58th place. West End Secondary didn’t have enough boys to score, but their top finisher was Octavio Martinez running 23:31 for 90th place.
The Clinton School had a freshman boy finish 8th in the Freshman Race as well. He’s listed as Max Marlin (who is a sophomore), but it’s likely that it was a bib mix-up with their freshman named Max who is listed in the Varsity results. Either way, he ran 11:23 to finish 8th.
Regis Invitational
Boys Varsity Race (13 teams)
The boys from MSIT finished 2nd with 83 points. Senior Adam Zarrilli ran 12:57 to finish 4th overall, a very impressive time to start the year. Brooklyn Tech finished 5th with 144 points. Boys Freshman A Race
The Brooklyn Tech freshmen finished 3rd with 86 points. They were led by Miles Albano’s 2nd place finish in 8:57. The MSIT freshmen were 4th with 106 points and were led by Leonardo Diomede’s 5th place finish in 9:28. Curtis didn’t field a full scoring team, but Stephen Williams finished 4th in 9:26. Samuel Garral of Lab Museum United finished 33rd in 10:40.

The Stuyvesant freshmen finished 3rd with 58 points. Their top finisher was Peter Finck who finished 2nd in 9:18.

BHXC PSAL Rankings – After Week Two
Girls
1. LaGuardia - Did not race this weekend, didn’t race the Grand Prix this past week.
2. Susan Wagner - Had three girls sub-22 at Clove Lakes this week and had their top freshman win the 1.5 race by nearly a minute.
3. Brooklyn Tech - Their top three didn’t race at Regis, but their top two varsity finishers ran well and it looks like they’ll have two Fast Freshmen™, making up for not getting one last year.
4. Bronx Science - Six girls under 22:10 in Jersey this weekend.
5. Stuyvesant - A solid 3rd in the merge at Regis this past weekend missing one of their top runners.
6. Hunter College Campus - Did not race this weekend, but looks like they ran the Grand Prix hard. Having four of five runners under 24 minutes is a solid start to the year.
7. Townsend Harris - 5th in the merge at Regis. They closed the gap a little between their top runner and runners 2-5.
8. HS for Math, Science and Engineering - Did not race this weekend, but put five girls under 25 minutes in the Grand Prix at Van Cortlandt this past week.
9. Beacon - five girls under 25 minutes at the Grand Prix last week.
10. Tottenville - Did not race this weekend, did not run many in the Grand Prix.
11. Columbia Secondary School - Did not race this weekend, not sure how much effort was put into the Grand Prix.
12. Midwood - have not raced yet.
13. DeWitt Clinton - The Wajid sisters swept both races at the Grand Prix last week. Not sure where runners 3-5 were.
14. Curtis - 16th in the merge at Regis, but had two girls under 19 minutes for the 4k.
15. West End Secondary - Had four girls under 27 minutes on a difficult course on Long Island. Unfortunately, their top runner from last year now plays soccer at LaGuardia.
16. The Clinton School - nearly put three under 27 at Sunken Meadow. Melia Murphy did not race and is not yet on their PSAL roster. Looking like they’ll need to find a 5th runner to make Cities.
17. Lab Museum United - Landed a club kid to lead their squad. Definitely helps their chances to qualify for Cities.
18. Francis Lewis - Things didn’t get much faster this weekend
19. Bayside - Finished 19th of 20 teams in the merge at Regis. Zero girls under 20 in the 4k.
Honorable Mentions: John Jay Campus, Bard
Boys
1. Bronx Science - dominant showing at Suffern. Probably won’t see them again until Columbus Day Weekend.
2. MSIT - close loss to Island rival Monsignor Farrell running just their seniors in the Varsity race. They’re a strong second in the PSAL right now.
3. Brooklyn Tech - 5th at Regis without top runner Wilchins. Will need improvement on the back end to catch MSIT
4. John Jay Campus - haven’t raced yet
5. Stuyvesant - 6th at Regis. Lacking a front-runner, but a solid 1-5 spread of less than a minute.
6. High School for Math, Science and Engineering - Did not race this weekend, but had nine boys under 20 minutes in the Grand Prix.
7. Hunter College Campus - A solid showing at Regis. It’s looking like they’ll have four under 20 minutes with a solid front runner.
8. Susan Wagner - Looks like they’ve got a solid top three - will need to find 4-5 to compete with the teams above them.
9. Lab Museum United - Returning top two runners haven’t run yet, but it looks like they’ll add a 3rd runner to that duo.
10. HS of American Studies - six boys under 21 minutes is a solid start to their year.
11. Curtis - didn’t score in any of the team races at Regis, but had 4 boys under 17 minutes for the 4k and a freshman that finished top ten in the frosh merge.
12. Riverdale/Kingsbridge Academy - A solid top three, but will need improvement from 4/5.
13. Bard - haven’t really raced yet.
14. Francis Lewis - the first Queens school to appear on this list. Finished 1-7 at the first Queens Grand Prix.
