The first two weekends of the season are in the books. We are still not sure of the best way to cover the indoor season since it lacks real team aspect. So here goes.

Boys 600 Meter Run - City Auto (and Secondary) Qualifying Standard: 1:29.14 (1:29.91)

At the Gobbler Classic, the Freshman race was won by Alexander Riley of JFK Campus. Hardly a rookie (VO2 Max), Riley ran 1:33.41

In the Varsity race, three boys hit the auto standard.

Lavell Irving (Thomas Jefferson)         1:26.18

Andreas Tsatsas (HSMSE)                   1:27.62

Nathan Zhu (Bronx Science)               1:28.20

At the Jim McKay Games, Riley defended his freshman title, running a 3-second improvement of 1:30.08. The Sophomore race was won by Moudour Birgui Alhou Za of Success Academy in 1:38.64. Not sure how Success Academy qualifies as a PSAL program, but maybe the PSAL is trying to build a non-public school division in the Public School Athletic League. As we learned a few weeks ago, Hunter also falls into this category.

No boy hit the automatic standard in the Varsity race, but it was won by Thomas Michi of Curtis in 1:29.44

At the Donald Douglas Games, Brooklyn Tech’s William Berger won the Freshman race in 1:29.64, narrowly missing the qualifier.  Leron Anderson of Truman won the Sophomore race in 1:23.88.

Three other boys qualified out of the Sophomore sections:

Kingston Mighty (Benjamin Banneker)          1:24.13

Isaiah Frederick (Brooklyn Tech)                    1:28.37

Alexander Draves (Stuyvesant)                      1:28.60

The Varsity race was won by Jaylen Anthony of Medgar Evers in 1:20.94.

Eight other boys qualified out of the Varsity sections:

Lavell Irving (Thomas Jefferson)                     1:24.30

Andreas Tsatsas (HSMSE)                               1:25.31

Thanh Nguyen (Brooklyn Tech)                      1:25.75

Nathan Norman (Medgar Evers)                    1:26.28

Elijah Hilaire (Medgar Evers)                          1:26.77

Conor Loftus (Brooklyn Tech)                         1:26.94

David O’Brien (Stuyvesant)                            1:28.24

Weston Macari (NEST+M)                              1:28.56

That could be some 4x8 for Medgar Evers

Only one athlete qualified for Cities out of the Varsity sections. And a huge welcome back to DeWitt Clinton’s Aisha Wajid (VO2 Max) who was seen in a boot at VCP this Fall. She ran 1:39.71 to win.

At the Jim McKay Games, the Freshman Race was won by Lula Eng-McDonald of HS for Health Professions in 2:00.84  The Sophomore Race was won by Alanah Gatling of Cambria Heights Academy in 1:59.75. Beacon’s Madeleine Kildow won the Varsity race in 1:52.25

Sophomore Kennedy Hutchinson (Jeuness) of Benjamin Banneker ran a very fast 1:34.92 to win the Sophomore race. That time often finds the podium at the Federation Meet. What’s most interesting about this is that we know how good Beacon’s freshman class is, but Sciaraffo didn’t even run XC in the Fall, she played soccer.
