The top PSAL teams and individuals took on the top runners from all over New York state this past weekend at Bowdoin Park. The meet is a combination of the NYS Federation Championships and Nike Cross Regionals, so the top teams and individuals also earn a trip to Oregon. At the end of the day, the PSAL had six All-Federation runners.

Boys Federation Race

The Bronx Science boys started hot for the 2nd straight year. They were in 3rd place at the halfway point and just 13 points out of an NXN qualifying spot. This year, while they still fell back, they didn’t fall quite as far. They were able to finish 4th and grab a podium spot for the first time in their history. Benjamin Berman finished 2nd, tying the top finish in PSAL history. He led the race at the 4,998 meter mark before getting passed by North Rockland’s Claudel Cherry. Sophomore Christopher Thom was 22nd in 16:29, finishing as the 3rd fastest sophomore in the state. Both Berman and Thom earned All-Federation honors.

MSIT, finished 18th, up from 22nd last year. They had a solid 1-5 spread of 1:03 and were led by Adam Zarrilli, who finished 90th in 17:12.

Brooklyn Tech finished 21st for the 2nd year in a row. PSAL Champ Alexander Jones struggled for the 2nd straight year, finishing in 194th place. Tech’s first finisher was junior Abraham Wilchins, who ran 17:09 to finish 85th.

Stuyvesant rounded out the PSAL squads, finishing 28th of 30 schools in the race, third-to-last for the second straight year. Senior Raphael Ramot led the way, running 16:45 to finish 45th.

Girls Federation Race

The LaGuardia girls finished 19th with a total of 414 points, up from the 393 they scored last year. Naomi Douglas earned All-Federation honors with her 38th place finish in 19:23. She ends her illustrious career having earned All-Federation three times. Overall, the 19th place finish is a little disappointing for a LaGuardia team that looked like a top-five contender in mid-October.

The Susan Wagner girls finished 22nd with 505 points. They were led by juniors Melisa Davila (127th in 20:59) and Riley Tefft (129th in 21:00).

Brooklyn Tech finished 25th for the 2nd year in a row. They were led by Francesca Haidt, who finished 120th in 20:48.

Stuyvesant rounded out the PSAL teams on the girls side as well. They finished 26th of 31 teams, led by senior Emma Savonije, who ran 21:05 to finish 135th.
