The PSAL’s underclassmen were in the spotlight this weekend as the city held its Freshman and Sophomore City Championship meet.
Freshman Boys
The first race of the day provided no real surprises. Former Bronx Tiger TC member and current Bronx Science freshman Aldo Hilpert-Navas won the race with a time of 8:55.3. Admittedly, we missed him in our preview, but mostly because he had only run one 1.5 race this season and didn’t break 10 minutes. Manhattan boys took the next 5 spots: Marco Arrojo of Lab Museum (2nd), Lucien Jaccon of Hunter (3rd), Alexander Draves of Stuyvesant (4th), Collin Toung of Manhattan Center (5th) and Oren Vecerka of HSMSE (6th).
In the team race, Brooklyn Tech extended its winning streak in this race to five years in a row. And as predicted, Bronx Science was 2nd and HSMSE was 3rd. These 3 schools account for 2/3 of the podium finishes over the last ten years! MSIT (4th) and John Jay Campus (5th) rounded out the top five.
Freshman Girls
Dewitt Clinton’s Aisha Wajid (VO2 Max) completed the Bronx club kid sweep with her convincing win in 10:02. She was followed by the 1-2 punch of Susan Wagner’s WaveRunners, Malina Rodriguez King and Milani Jackson. Brooklyn’s Evelyn Craig (Brooklyn Tech) and Matilda Quinn (John Jay Campus) rounded out the top five.
Susan Wagner won the team race easily finishing 2-3-6-16-23. Not surprisingly, Brooklyn Tech finished 2nd (4-12-14-22-53). Stuyvesant (3rd), LaGuardia (4th) and Townsend Harris (5th) finished off the top five.
Sophomore Boys
Jasper Graham of Hunter College Campus won this race easily, clocking 14:02 over the 4 kilometer course. Gavin Ashe of John Jay Campus was runner up in 14:14. And then it was the Bronx Science show: HSMSE transfer Lex Yeung, Elijah Hernandez, Reed Argiropoulos and Eliot Faith grabbed the next four spots. Leo Kindred finished 11th to seal the victory for the Wolverines. Brooklyn Tech grabbed yet another trophy by finishing 2nd. MSIT was 3rd, Stuyvesant was 4th and HSMSE was 5th.
Sophomore Girls
Melia Murphy of the Clinton School won this race easily, just under 16 minutes. Curtis star Riley Tefft finished 2nd. PPYRC teammates Eleanor Lewis Jenkins (Bard) and Genevieve Backus (LaGuardia) finished 3rd and 4th and Natalia Piszczatowski of Townsend Harris finished 5th.
Brooklyn Tech won the team trophy without it’s top runner, Francesca Haidt, who ran a workout afterward instead. They were led by Tatiana O’Neal’s 6th place finish. Townsend Harris finished 2nd and Bronx Science grabbed the 3rd place trophy. Stuyvesant (4th) and LaGuardia (5th) rounded out the top five teams.
Next Saturday: The Main Event! Preview will be out mid-week.
