Frosh/Soph Cities Recap

The PSAL’s underclassmen were in the spotlight this weekend as the city held its Freshman and Sophomore City Championship meet.

Freshman Boys

The first race of the day provided the biggest surprise. Brooklyn Tech didn’t win this race for the first time since 2018, and they didn’t even hit the podium. Admittedly, this was a swing and a miss for us, as well. The MSIT freshman hadn’t run at Van Cortlandt all season and it’s tough to compare times from Ocean Breeze. Susan Wagner’s newest club phenom Tristan Acevedo lowered his PSAL record to an incredible 8:12. PPYRC teammates Joseph Manzo (John Jay Campus) and Miles Dutra (Bronx Science) went 2-3 before MSIT teammates Abeishan Pakeerathan and Chenul Gamage finished 4th and 5th to lead their squad to the victory. Bronx Science beat Stuyvesant by a point to finish 2nd.

Ten Frosh Boys to Watch:

Tristan Acevedo (Susan Wagner)        1st

Miles Dutra (Bronx Science)                3rd

Joseph Manzo (John Jay Campus)      2nd

Henry Todd (Brooklyn Tech)               14th

William Berger (Brooklyn Tech)          8th

Freshman Girls

Waverunner Maeve Heck (Tottenville) ran away with this race, running 9:52. June Grunden of LaGuardia followed in 2nd and Stuyvesant’s Eliam Brody was 3rd. None of those teams hit the podium. The 4th and 5th place finishes of Mayte Vidal Flores and Annaliese Evans helped Brooklyn Tech to its 2nd place finish. But it was the Beacon girls who dominated all year and again took the victory. They were led by the 11-12 finish of Natalie Lisman and Olivia Schroeder. The Hunter girls nipped LaGuardia by a point for 3rd. Manhattan schools took 5 of the top 6 spots, so it’s clear yet again how much talent is pouring into that borough.
