Frosh/Soph Cities Recap

The PSAL’s underclassmen were in the spotlight this weekend as the city held its Freshman and Sophomore City Championship meet.

Freshman Boys

This race was nowhere near as close as we thought it would be. The Stuyvesant boys beat Brooklyn Tech by 36 points and Bronx Science by 37 points to claim the victory. It should be no surprise that Tech and Science hit the podium yet again. Miles Albano of Brooklyn Tech held off Peter Finck of Stuyvesant by two seconds to claim the championship.

Freshman Girls

It should never be a surprise when Brooklyn Tech wins a freshman race, but this actually was a bit of a surprise to us. Susan Wagner ran the exact same team that was victorious at Marty Lewis, but Tech’s 4th finisher beat Wagner’s 4th girl by a good margin and that was the difference. The girls from Edward R. Murrow grabbed the final podium spot, placing four girls in the top 35. Sophie Walther’s 9:37 is a top ten all-time PSAL performance in this race, and the fastest this decade.

Sophomore Boys

The Sophomore boys race was the closest race of the day, with only five points separating the top three teams. Stuyvesant and MSIT both scored 70 points, so it came down to a 6th man tiebreaker. Stuyvesant’s sixth runner was Evan Chang, who ran 15:34 to finish 34th. MSIT’s sixth runner, Andy Weng, ran 15:53 to finish 45th. Bronx Science was 3rd with 75 points. Tristan Acevedo (Susan Wagner) ran 13:18 to win by nearly a minute.

Sophomore Girls

The Beacon girls defended their Freshman title by winning the Sophomore title, placing three girls in the top ten and all five girls in the top 21. Hunter College Campus grabbed second by placing four girls 10th through 15th. The Stuyvesant girls went 1-2-8, but fell short after that, finishing 3rd. With Maeve Heck (Tottenville) not racing, Eliam Brody (Stuyvesant) grabbed the title, running 16:20. Only two girls (Brody and Hetherington) that finished in the top ten as freshman, finished in the top ten again as sophomores.
