Week Six Recap
The final weekend before PSAL championship season begins is now behind us.
SIHST&FA Varsity/JV Island Championships - Clove Lakes State Park
MSIT defeated Monsignor Farrell 30-45 to win the Island Championship. Adam Zarrilli and Scott Kelly went 2nd and 3rd in 15:58 and 16:15, respectively. MSIT had a 1-5 split of 1 minute. Susan Wagner finished 3rd, without Andrea Gallina. Curtis was 5th with Marcos Penaranda recording a top ten finish. Finishing 7-8-9 were Tottenville, Port Richmond and CSIHS/McCown.
On the girls side, Maeve Heck of Tottenville won the race in 19:40. The girls from Susan Wagner won the Championship thanks to finishes of 3, 4, 5, and 6 by Melisa Davila, Riley Tefft, Genevieve Pantaleo and Alisa Kiliarska. Curtis was 4th, with Zoe Arellano garnering a top ten finish. MSIT and Tottenville followed in 5th and 6th. New Dorp (8th) and CSIHS/McCown (9th) rounded out the team standings.
NYC XC Carnival - Van Cortlandt Park
Yousef Abdelhakim of Midwood won the Varsity B race in a very fast time of 13:16. Unfortunately, he only had three teammates run, so Midwood could not score as a team. Jaisimha Dattatreyan of Lab Museum, finished 3rd in the race, running 14:40. Lab did not score as a team, either.
Francis Lewis finished 8th of 10 teams in the Girls Varsity race. Sophia Wu ran 19:39 to finish 34th. Mirabelle Threadgold of Lab Museum ran 21:34 to finish 71st.
Section One Coaches Invitational - Bowdoin Park
Bronx Science finished 3rd in the Varsity I race, but 2nd in the overall merge. Their 1-5 spread was just over a minute. Three boys, Elijah Hernandez, Christopher Thom and Eliot Faith broke 17 minutes on the difficult Bowdoin course.
John Jay Campus finished 2nd to Saint Anthony’s in the Varsity II race. Henry Bissell was 5th in a very impressive 16:55. And although freshman boys don’t normally have an impact on the Varsity scene, Ethan Riordan ran an impressive 17:45. Without him, they certainly don’t finish 2nd in this race. We might have to start tracking Fast Freshmen™ on the boys side, too. HS of American Studies finished 10th of the 21 teams in the race. Senior Declan Olds ran 17:55 to finish 23rd.
In the Varsity III race, HSMSE overcame a DNF from top runner Hansen to finish 6th. Christian Higgins ran 17:27 to finish 14th. Stuyvesant, also missing their top runner, finished 10th. Tyler Horiuchi ran 18:06 to finish 29th.
In the Boys Merge (62 teams):
2. Bronx Science
9. John Jay Campus
21. HSMSE
27. Stuyvesant
39. HS of American Studies
In the Girls Varsity I race, Bronx Science finished 9th of 16 teams. Without top runner Sally Kramer, Hazel Lyons-Baum finished 42nd in 21:53.
The most eye-opening race of the day belonged to John Jay Campus in the Girls Varsity II race. As a team they finished 9th, but when you consider that their top freshman, Elizabeth Grogan, easily won the Freshman Race, you start to see their real potential. Matilda Quinn ran the 2nd fastest time of the entire day, covering the course in 19:01 to grab the win. Her next three teammates all broke 23 minutes.
In the Girls Varsity III race, Stuyvesant and HSMSE finished 5th and 6th, respectively. Both squads were without a few of their top runners. Eliam Brody led Stuyvesant, running 20:48 to finish 16th. Cameron Hetherington ran 21:07 to finish 25th for HSMSE. The LaGuardia girls also had four girls in the race, led by Leah Belyavsky running 19:52 to place 4th.
In the Girls Merge (44 teams):
19. Stuyvesant
21. John Jay Campus
23. Bronx Science
25. HSMSE
BHXC PSAL Rankings – After Week Six
Girls
1. LaGuardia - A solid top three has them clinging to this spot for dear life. A fast 4 and 5 have yet to emerge/hit their times from last year.
2. Susan Wagner - A very promising effort from their top four runners this weekend. There’s definitely some talent there capable of being a title-clinching 5th runner… if they’re healthy
3. Brooklyn Tech - Did not race this weekend.
4. John Jay Campus - Another jump up the rankings, thanks largely in part to the performances this weekend of their would-be 3-4-5 runners: Ohashi, Kaye and Blagg.
5. Stuyvesant - Stays at this spot, thanks largely to their top two runners outrunning the top two of Bronx Science by quite a bit this weekend. Also missing girls and still beat Science in the merge.
6. Bronx Science - Missing top runner Kramer again. Times at Suffern now seem a little inflated.
7. HS for Math, Science and Engineering - Another great effort by sophomore Cameron Hetherington and solid runs by their 4 and 5.
8. Hunter College Campus - Did not race
9. Townsend Harris - Same results we’ve been seeing from them at Friday’s VCP meet.

21. HS of American Studies - Did not race.
22. West End Secondary - Did not race.
23. MSIT - This group could be on the cut-line to qualify for Cities on time.
24. Tottenville - Even with Heck winning, they weren’t even the 2nd PSAL team at the Island Champs, losing to both Curtis and MSIT. Heck in danger of being relegated to the Individual Race at Cities.

26. Lab Museum United - Only had two girls race.
