Week Three Recap
The weather robbed us of a fantastic weekend of racing all around the area.
PSAL Group Run at Van Cortlandt Park - CANCELED
Suffolk Coaches Invitational at Sunken Meadow State Park, Kings Park, NY - CANCELED
Six Flags Wild Safari Invitational at Six Flags, Jackson, NJ - CANCELED
Xavier Invitational at Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex, Staten Island, NY - CANCELED
Bowdoin XC Classic at Bowdoin Park, Wappingers Falls, NY - The only meet contested.
Bowdoin XC Classic – Bowdoin Park, Wappingers Falls, NY
With teams like CBA and Bishop Hendricken and runners like Leah Starkey of Ocean Township (NJ), entered, there was little chance this meet would have been canceled.
Exactly six PSAL girls competed in the first race of the day at Bowdoin. Melia Murphy of The Clinton School made her season debut, finishing 4th in 19:41.
The girls from Hunter College Campus (well, five of them), finished 3rd of 6 teams in the race. They were led by Noa Yirmiyahu, who ran 22:01 to finish 12th. Elisabeth Chen ran 23:27 for 18th and Dalia Richlin ran 23:58 for 21st.
The girls from Brooklyn Tech, Susan Wagner and Townsend Harris were entered, but did not compete.
On the Boys side, the Seagulls from MSIT were the only PSAL squad to compete. They finished 6th in the Varsity II race against perennial powerhouse programs like Bishop Hendricken of RI and Xavier of CT. Adam Zarrilli ran 16:57 to finish 15th, followed by Scott Kelly running 17:11 to finish 18th. Overall, they put four boys under 18 minutes on a tough course. Abeishan Pakeerathan won the Boys JV II Race in 18:16, which would have made him MSIT’s 5th runner in the Varsity race.
The boys from Brooklyn Tech, Susan Wagner and HS of American Studies were entered, but did not run.
BHXC PSAL Rankings – After Week Three
Girls
1. LaGuardia - Were entered at Xavier (canceled). Did not race Grand Prix, which means we are likely to see a hard effort at Marty Lewis.
2. Susan Wagner - Were entered at Bowdoin, but didn’t show. Did not race Grand Prix.
3. Brooklyn Tech - Were entered at Bowdoin, but didn’t show. Did not race Grand Prix, which means we could see a hard effort at Marty Lewis.
4. Bronx Science - Were entered at Sunken Meadow (canceled), did not race Grand Prix
5. Stuyvesant - Were entered at Sunken Meadow (canceled), only a few girls racing Grand Prix
6. Townsend Harris - Were entered at Bowdoin, but didn’t show. Raced the Grand Prix at VCP, all five girls under 24 minutes.
7. Hunter College Campus - Had five girls race at Bowdoin. Definitely missing some of their top seven, but pretty underwhelming.
8. Beacon - six girls under 24:30 at the Grand Prix last week. 1-5 spread is less than one minute. Their top freshman already under 12 minutes for the 1.5.
9. HS for Math, Science and Engineering - Raced neither this weekend nor the Grand Prix.
10. Tottenville - Did not race this weekend, did not run many in the Grand Prix.
11. Columbia Secondary School - Did not race this weekend, top runner Marmolejos yet to race.
12. Midwood - have not raced yet.
13. Queens High School Complex - A surprise entry here, but cannot ignore five girls under 25 minutes on the Prospect Park course. Already showing more depth than the teams below them and they could likely be the second best team in Queens.
14. The Clinton School - Most of team entered at Xavier (canceled). Murphy made debut at Bowdoin.
15. Edward R. Murrow - Four girls at or around 26 minutes in Prospect Park. Will be interesting to see how they run at VCP.
16. Manhattan Center for Science and Math - Five girls (including two freshmen) at 12:12 or faster for the 1.5 course at VCP. We’ll see how that translates to the 5k, but that’s better depth than they’ve had in a while.
17. DeWitt Clinton - Two Wajid sisters under 23 minutes, their top frosh from last season still has not raced. Have shown no depth beyond the Wajid family.
18. Curtis - Did not race
19. West End Secondary - Were entered at Six Flags (canceled). Did not race Grand Prix.
20. Lab Museum United - Everywhere they entered this weekend was canceled.
21. Francis Lewis - Did not race this weekend.
22. Bayside - Did not race this weekend.
Honorable Mentions: John Jay Campus, Bard (neither team has really raced yet)
Boys
1. Bronx Science - did not race this week
2. MSIT - solid showing at Bowdoin this weekend. Four under 18 minutes at this point in the season is a good start.
3. Brooklyn Tech - Weather robbed us of a showdown with MSIT to see who currently sits second in the PSAL
4. John Jay Campus - Entered at Xavier (canceled). Did not race Grand Prix.
5. Stuyvesant - Entered at Sunken Meadow (canceled). Some raced Grand Prix.
6. High School for Math, Science and Engineering - Raced neither this weekend nor the Grand Prix.
7. Hunter College Campus - Close to having all five under 20 minutes.
8. Susan Wagner - Entered at Bowdoin, but didn’t show. Did not race Grand Prix.
9. Lab Museum United - Their returning top two made their debut at the Grand Prix. Slowly building toward a solid top five.
10. HS of American Studies - Entered at Bowdoin, but didn’t show. Did not race Grand Prix.
11. Curtis - Did not race.
12. Riverdale/Kingsbridge Academy - Did not race
13. LaGuardia - Top runner Weller running very well, doesn’t seem to have much help yet.
14. Bard - had a Freshman break 20 minutes at the Grand Prix.
15. Francis Lewis - 1-5 spread of about two minutes at Queens Grand Prix.
16. The Clinton School - had a few boys race the Grand Prix
17. HS for Construction - Top runner Briones made debut, winning Queens Grand Prix.
Honorable Mention: Midwood, Metropolitan Campus
Upcoming Meets:
PSAL Marty Lewis Challenge - There aren’t a ton of other racing options next weekend, and it doesn’t look like any PSAL schools are entered anywhere else. This could be a very good mid-season look at where teams stand.
